Phil Greenwald began his officiating career in 1984 when he started running and volunteering in New York Road Runners events and joined Tracy Sundlun’s team. Tracy recruited him for the Metropolitan Athletics Congress meets. Phil was a central part of the organization. Unofficial mentoring was part of his daily existence in the early days of M.A.C. If it wasn’t showing officials how to be completely thorough with every task in track & field, his effort was always 100% to benefit the organization & athletes.
A perfect recalled example of this was when he was calling out the colors of the singlets of finishers, a regular person would say “red, blue, purple… Phil would say “Rose, Turquoise, Lavender. While that might sound funny, he was never wrong with his calls or descriptions. That is what makes Phil a Hall of Famer
He was the Finish Line Coordinator for many New York area meets, including the Millrose Games and USA Indoor Championships, both in Madison Square Garden.
More recently he has been the referee for many New York Road Runners races, is a member of the USATF Rules Committee and, on February 3, was the Men’s Referee at the Olympic Trials Marathon. Phil is the current USATF-NY Treasurer and does a lot of work with the timing systems for Indoor & outdoor track events.
