ED JOYCE ( - 2017) had a spectacular experience in Track and Field. He was a Track athlete at St. John’s University (Class of ’70) and when he entered a career in education, he rapidly became a coach and gravitated as many coaches do into officiating. He also served many years as a meet director at PSAL and other events. For 10 years in the 70’s and 80’s Joyce was the head Girls Track and Cross-Country coach at St. Francis High School. He guided those St. Francis teams to eight city championships in that time. After that, Ed Joyce took on the job as the PSAL Commissioner of Track and Field for several years while working as an administrator with the NYC Board of Education. For 10 years Ed Joyce also acted as the Track and Field Coordinator for the Empire State Games, first as the Masters coordinator and later as Open Coordinator. In the last eight years of his life, Ed worked as an assistant coach at Fordham University. As an official, Ed was omnipresent at local association events either as an umpire, finish judge, clerk, or referee. He was a veteran of the Tracy Sundlun era of developmental meets for the old M.A.C. and was a fixture at most CHSAA meets as well. He served as Chief umpire at the Olympic Invitational as well as the USA Championships held at Madison Square Garden. Ed now joins his old traveling companions, Warren Ring and Lou Vasquez in our Officials Hall of Fame. Sadly we lost Ed in 2017….. so today we will posthumously induct him into the Hall of Fame.
