Stella Cashman
STELLA CASHMAN
grew up in a small country town in Ireland. After graduating from High School, she went to London where she started out as a student nurse, but later switched to working as a bank clerk for Lloyds Bank. After four years in London she immigrated to the USA and a life in New York City.
She first worked at NYU University Hospital while she pursued a degree in Business. She then went onto their Graduate School for an MBA majoring in their CPA program and minoring in Taxation. She went to work at a Big 8 accounting firm while she worked on obtaining her CPA licensure. From there she worked as an internal auditor for business firms while traveling all over the USA.
For exercise, she took up Race Walking and competed for over 30 years. In that time, she earned innumerable USATF National, Regional, and Association medals, and was nominated as “Racewalker of the Year” by the New York Road Runners Club when they had the Racewalk division.
Perhaps her greatest competitive achievement was winning a Bronze individual medal as well as Team Gold and Silver medals at the World Veterans (WAVA) Games. Stella not only competed, she also coached many other local athletes in racewalking, and conducted clinics in the event for the New York PSAL.
She got started in officiating in the late 1980’s. She has been a Master Level Official for years now. Initially she only judged Racewalks, but then got quickly involved in judging other events. She started officiating Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field and Cross-Country at High School, Collegiate, and USATF Meets, usually umpiring, but doing other judging tasks as well.
She has judged Race Walking at all levels both Indoors and Outdoors including National Championship events and the World Veterans Games (WAVA).
For many years she served as the Racewalking Chair of our local New York Association and conducted 10 Road Racewalks a year for a period of 20 years along with many clinics to encourage people to get involved in the event. Stella not only trained athletes in Racewalking, she also trained many officials to not fear the event and become involved and interested in judging.
Stella Cashman, for your outstanding contributions to our sport we welcome you as a member of our USATF New York Officials’ Hall of Fame.
