I was so intrigued by the idea of racing along the famous New Jersey coast that when the 12 km Championships announcement was made, I marked it on my race calendar. I was unlucky, though, in deeply bruising one of my knees a week prior to the event, so I knew I'd have to race quite cautiously in order to allow the knee to keep healing well. This year, I've raced extremely lightly and much more patience with my training. Event-wise, i heard it was the windiest this 12K has ever seen, but I comfortably held a 6:13 pace for 5 of the 7.3 miles -- then my knee spoke up a bit so I decided to dial back significantly and walked for 2 minutes to assess...before picking it up again to finish So although I was 2 minutes off my goal, I was still elated by the beautiful course and the simple aspect of racing again, being around other competitors and enjoying the stunning beauty of the land and sea out there in Sandy Hook. The race was wonderfully organized, and a big thank you is deserved by the USATF New Jersey contingent!
