Bayly and Kohut Win National Titles at Masters 12 km Championships in New Jersey

Results
On Sunday (18-SEPT) four (4) athletes
from USATF New York competed in the
USATF Masters 12 km Championships
in Highlands, N.J. The championship, hosted by the by The Hook or Crook 12K, was the seventh race in the
2022 USATF National Masters Grand Prix
. The conditions were hot and humid with temperatures reaching into the 80s as the runners were finishing.
A total of 300 athletes from 32 states competed in the championships.
The storyline of the day for the New York athletes were the national titles won by
Fiona Bayly
, 55, of New York and
Cheryl Kohut
, 77, of Cold Spring.
Despite running with a collarbonefracture suffered earlier in the week as a result of an encouter with a street scooter, Bayly dominated the women's 55-59 division as she won her eighth career USATF title. She stopped the clock at 47:30; 2:34 ahead of runner-up Susanne La Burt from New Jersey. Her performance scored 90.83% on the age-grading tables; which was the second best score of the 300 athletes (men and women) that competed. Scores of 80-90% are considered national class performances with scores over 90% being considered world class performances. The top score was 93.55% turned in by Nora Cary (age 67, 54:05) of New Jersey. Bayly was the fourth overall finisher (out of 95) in the women's race.
In the women's 70-74 division,
Cheryl Kohut
won running a very impressive 1:07:33. Her age graded score of 87.67% was the eighth best among the 95 women that competed.
For the second year in a row
Nicholas Thompson
, 47, of Brooklyn finished second in the men's 45-49 division. Thompson, who competes for the Brooklyn Track Club, stopped the clock at 41:32 (84.64%). David Angell of Virginia won in 41:00.
In the men's 40-44 division,
Joel Almonte
, 43, of Ozone Park, NY placed 21st in a time of 1:00:31.
