Hudson, Wajid, Waterton are golden at National Junior Olympics in Florida

New York athletes win six national titles; 47 all-American honors

On Sunday (1-Aug) the 2021 USATF National Junior Olympic Championships concluded in Jacksonville, Florida. The championships were held on the campus of North Florida University. USATF New York was represented by 98 athletes who competed in 195 individual events and four relays.  5432 athletes from 49 states competed during the sevens days of competition that began on Monday (26-Jul).

New York athletes won six (6) national titles while a total of 47 all-American performances were earned by athletes for placing in the top eight in an event. Each all-American was presented with a championship medal, an all-American patch, and a coveted Junior Olympic all-American hat.   Eleven athletes from New York earned multiple all-American honors.

Hudson, Wajid, Waterton combine to earn four titles; nine all-American honors

Leading the charge with the all-American haul were Brielle Hudson (New York Starz), Mariam Wajid (VO2Max TC) and Evan Waterton (unattached) .  Hudson won two national titles and two silver medals as she was recognized with four all-American honors.  Wajid earned three visits to the awards podium, winning one national title, tp be recognized as an all-American.

Competing in the 9-10 girls division Hudson won the High Jump (1.30m) and Javelin (31.54m) and was the runner-up in the Shot Put (8.52m) and Triathlon (1126 pts.)

Wajid won the girls 7-8 1500m (5:22.61) and then finished third in the 800m (2:47.14) and seventh in the 400m (1:18.34).

In the boys 17-18 division Waterton, a rising senior at Monticello High School, won the 2000m steeplechase in a time of 6:10.28 and earned a bronze medal in the 1500m running 3:58.60.  His 1500m time is the #2 time for a New York prep this year.

Also winning national titles in Jacksonville were Nathaniel Samson (VO2Max TC), Rylee Ferretti (Ocean Breeze Wave Runners), and Brianna Carter (NY Starz TC).  

Samson won the boys 11-12 1500m Race Walk in a time of 9:21:21 and added a 39th place in the Javelin.  

Ferretti claimed the 15-16 girls 3000m running 10:33.44.  She also finished 12th in the 1500m (5:02.13).

Carter won 15-16 girls 2000m Steeplechase running 7:36.23.

There is always a silver lining 

In addition to Hudson's two silver medals, New Yorkers earned seven other runner-up finishes.  

Alexander Riley (VO2 Max TC) earned two of those as he was second in both the 800m (2:30.12) and 1500m (5:01.19) in the 9-10 boys division.  

Aaron Keller (unattached) finished second in the 13-14 boys 1500m running 4:23.06 and was fourth in the 3000m in 10:01.39. 

Gabriel Samson (VO2 Max TC), the younger brother of Nathaniel, finished second in the 7-8 boys Javelin. He also placed ninth in the Shot Put just missing making the podium by 6½ inches.

Jurnee Fitzgerald (unattached) was the runner-up in the 11-12 girls 100m running 13.05.  She was also fifth in the 200m (26.74).

Junior Olympic veteran Kira Lindner (Hudson Valley Flight Club) finished second in the 17-18 girls Hammer Throw with a best mark of 47.97m (157-4). She was also 11th in the Discus Throw.  She will matriculate to the University of Pennsylvania to continue her education.

Shania Young (VO2Max TC) finished second in the  13-14 girls Triple Jump with a best of 10.79m (35-4¾).  She earned a second all-American with her seventh place finish in the long jump.

It runs in the family

In addition to the Samson brothers three other sets of siblings earned all-American honors.   

Aisha Wajid (VO2 Max TC), Mariam's older sister, finished fourth in the 11-12 girls 3000m (11:28.90) and earned her second trip to the awards podium with a sixth place finish in the 800m (2:29.53).  She also finished 12th in the 1500m.

Abigail Riley (VO2Max TC), Alexander's younger sister, finished fourth in the 7-8 girls 1500m (5:40.22) and sixth in the 800m (2:55.06)

Konstantin MacKinnon & Kilian MacKinnon (Westchester Wolves) earned a total of three all-American hats. Konstantin finished third in the 11-12 boys 1500m running 4:43.36 and was sixth in the 800m (2:23.68).  His younger brother Kilian finished sixth in the 9-10 boys 1500m (5:14.94).

Two Abigails; Four all-American honors

Additional multiple all-American accolades were earned by Abigail Clue (unattached) and Abigail Robisky (Ocean Breeze Wave Runners) each earned two all-American honors in the 9-10 girls division.  

Clue finished third in both the 400m (1:04.28) and 800m (2:33.75). She was also just off the podium in the 200m where she finished 10th running 29.12.  

Robisky placed sixth in the 100m (14.13) and seventh in the 200m (28.54).
