I played basketball, football and baseball before high school, but never found joy in any of them. It was my dad's suggestion that I try shot put in my freshman year of high school, so I gave it a go and never looked back.
One of my most memorable highlights was making the New Balance indoor nationals in weight throw as a freshman after only 3 months of picking up a weight. A second memorable highlight would be receiving the New York Gatorade player of the year award. As for my biggest memorable moment, it would be winning the 2022 New Balance Outdoor Nationals in discus with a new personal record.
In choosing UCLA, I placed emphasis on the quality of degree I could earn. The second consideration is the resources provided by athletics, and the third is the ideal balance between work and life. As an aside from my professional life, I have the opportunity to explore the stunning SOCAL area.
Being an African-American thrower, this recognition is very important to me. Those accomplishments prove to the youth in New York, and particularly to young black athletes, that they can accomplish anything they find passion in if they put dedication and discipline into it.
