Rubenstein and Brown Rewrite Record Books at National Youth Championships in Ohio

Results

On Saturday (1-Jul) the 2023 USATF Youth Outdoor & Combined Events Championships concluded in Geneva, OH. The championships were held at the SPIRE Institute.

1112 athletes competed in a total of 2761 events during the six days of competition that began on Monday (26-Jun). USATF New York was represented by 159 athletes who competed in 397 individual events. 

The New York clubs with athletes competing were (# of athletes): Prospect Park Youth Running (29), Ocean Breeze Wave Runners (24), VO2Max Track Club (19), New York Novas TC (17), Medgar Evers Cougars (17), 288 Track Club (12), River Cities Athletics (9), Notre Dame Track (7), Chelsea Greyhounds (5), Envy Track Club (5), Dashing Dons & Divas (1), Sports Performance Group (1), Tailwind (1), and The Camp (1).

Nineteen (19) New York members won a total of 31 national titles.

There were numerous storylines to highlight by the New York athletes as Nico Jones (Dashing Dons & Divas), Abigail Robisky (Ocean Breeze Wave Runnerss), and Renna Rubenstein (Chelsea Greyhounds) each won three individual titles with Rubenstein setting three new association records. Additionally, Kory Brown (Ocean Breeze Wave Runnerss) won two titles while setting a new Association record in the 100m and Tristan Acevedo (The Camp), Anisa Dixon (288 Track Club), Acadia Helfand (Chelsea Greyhounds), Adriana Pettinelli (Tailwind), and Mariam Wajid (VO2 Max) all joined Brown in winning two titles.

THREE WIN THREE TITLES

Renna Rubenstein was sensational during the week as she won three events (200m, 400m, 200m Hurdles) and finished second in the 100m in the 13-14 girls division. In the 200m she set a new personal best by .77 seconds running 24.77 to set also set a new New York Association record. The previous record was 25.23 set in 2017 by Brianna Brown. Kylie Comas (New York Novas TC, 25.90), Zariah Hargrove (Prospect Park Youth Running Club, 26.31), and Brianna Munoz (New York Novas TC, 28.07) finished fourth, fifth and eighth, respectively. In the 400m she ran 57.01 to set a new personal best by .92 seconds as she won by .79 seconds over Morgan Means of Georgia. Aisha Wajid (VO2Max Track Club, 58.63), Milani Jackson (Ocean Breeze Wave Runners, 59.72), Zariah Hargrove (Prospect Park Youth Running, 1:01.12) finished third, fourth, and eighth, respectively. In the 200m Hurdles she ran 27.64; winning by nearly 1.5 seconds over Kaleah Montgomery of New Jersey as she broke the association record of 27.98 set last year by Madison Praylow. Brianna Munoz (New York Novas TC, 31.97), Riley Tefft (Ocean Breeze Wave Runners, 32.19), Sofia Hamilton (New York Novas TC, 32.67) and Victoria Smith (River Cities Athletics, 35.35) finished fourth through seventh, respectively. In finishing second in the 100m (12.22) she set a new personal best and established her third New York association record (previous record - Iantha Wright, 12.31, 2014). Zariah Hargrove (Prospect Park Youth Running Club) finished third running 12.65.

Abigail Robisky (Ocean Breeze Wave Runners) won the 200m, 400m, and 800m in the 11-12 girls division. In the 200m she stopped the clock at 26.25 to defeat Aniyah West of Kentucky by .76 seconds. In the 400m she ran 58.90, just missing her own association record of 58.79 set earlier this year, as she won by nearly two seconds over Ky'Laya Martin of Texas. Anahia Joseph (New York Novas, 1:00.96) finished third and Zoey Warmsley (288 Track Club, 1:05.46) finished third and eighth, respectively. In the 800m she stopped the clock at 2:24.65 to win by nearly six seconds over fellow USATF New York member Zoey Warmsley (288 Track Club) who ran 2:30.74.

In the 8U Boys division Nico Jones (Dashing Dons & Divas) won the 100m, 400m., and 800m In the 100m his time of 14.93 defeated Carter Lee of Kentucky by .22 seconds. He stopped the clock at 1:16.81 to win the 400m over Nathan Bellinger of South Carolina by over three seconds. And in the 800m he ran 2:53.70 to win by over two seconds over Jayden Flowers of Florida.

THE DOUBLE WINNERS



Kory Jones (Ocean Breeze Wave Runners - pictured above) won the 100m and 200m in the 15-16 division. In the 100m he set a new personal best by .08 seconds in a time of 10.62 as he also established a new New York association record. The previous record was 10.81 set by Jaheim Jones Newburgh in 2017. In the 200m he stopped the clock at 21.96 to defeat Drew Modelski of Ohio by over .50 seconds. Yasir Murden (Ocean Breeze Wave Runners) finished fifth running  22.94.

In the 11-12 Boys division Tristan Acevedo (The Camp) won the 1500m and 3000m. In the 1500m his time of 4:49.07 was over four seconds ahead of runner-up Gray Dietenhofer of California. Alexander Riley (VO2Max, 4:58.97), Andrew Collins (Unattached, 4:59.20), and Romel Barrett (VO2Max, 5:05.26) finished third, fourth, and sixth, respectively. In the 3000m Acevedo set a new personal best running 10:15.58 to defeat Van Johnson of Colorado by nearly 26 seconds. Romel Barrett (VO2Max, 10:55.42) finished fourth.

Anisa Dixon (288 Track Club) won the 200m and 400m in the 9-10 Girls division. In the 200m she ran 29.62 to defeat Jae'ani Miles of New Jersey by .91 seconds. Laila Holm (New York Novas, 31.30), Amara Thegg (Prospect Park Youth RC, 34.09), and Taylor McRae (Prospect Park Youth RC, 36.42) finished third, seventh, and eighth, respectively.  In the 400m Dixon ran 1:04.35, a new personal best by 1.75 seconds, as she defeated Genesis Anderson of Indiana by .29 seconds. Abigail Riley (VO2Max, 1:07.62) and Mariam Wajid (VO2Max; 1:10.94) finished fourth and fifth, respectively. 

Acadia Helfand (Chelsea Greyhounds) claimed victory in the 17-18 Girls 3000m and 2000m Steeplechase. In the 3000m she ran 11:19.89 to defeat Scarlett Alvarez of South Carolina. In the Steeplechase she stopped the clock at 7:41.66; just missing her personal best by 1.14 seconds, to Arielle Phillips of Kentucky. 

Adriana Pettinelli (Tailwind) won the 1500m and 3000m in the 13-14 Girls division. In the 1500m she stopped the clock at 4:44.96 to defeat Isabella Ascherl of Pennsylvania by over seven seconds. Her time was an outdoor personal best. Finishing fourth and fifth, respectively were Missy Tiller (Prospect Park Youth Running RC, 5:04.67) and Saffa Ellis (Prospect Park Youth Running RC, 5:05.76). In the 3000m Pettinelli ran to another outdoor personal best as she stopped the clock at 10:13.86 to take her second championship title. She won by over five seconds defeating Ascherl again. Saffa Ellis (Prospect Park Youth RC) finished fourth in a time of 11:11.18.

Mariam Wajid (VO2Max) won gold medals in the 800m and 1500m in the 9-10 Girls division and also finished fifth in the 400m.  In the 800m her time of 2:30.04 as a personal best by .79 seconds and led a 1-2-3 sweep of the event by VO2Max athletes and a 1-4 sweep by New Yorkers.  Following Wajid across the line were her VO2Max teammates Abigail Riley (2:31.44) and Ari Pennicooke (2:42.81). Finishing fourth and eighth, respectively Alison Cleary (2:43.24) and Jazara Williams (2:58.73); both of the Prospect Park Youth Running Club. In the 1500m Wajid ran 5:08.72 to defeat Riley who ran 5;16.65. Pennicooke (5:33.27) and Cleary (5:40.30) finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
