New York Results - USATF Masters 12 km Championships

On Sunday (17-September) three (3) athletes from USATF New York competed in the USATF Masters 12 km Championships in Highlands, NJ. The championship, hosted by the By Hook or By Crook 12K for the third straight year, was the ninth, and penultimate, race in the 2023 USATF National Masters Grand Prix. A total of 273 athletes (167 men and 106 women) competed in the championships; ranging in age from 40 to 86.

As she has been doing for years, Fiona Bayly, 56, of New York stormed to another national title as she won the women's 55-59 division in a time of 47:34. It was her fifth national title in 2023 and her 14th in her career. She defeated Lori Kingsley of Pennsylvania by 2 minutes and 44 seconds. Her age graded score* of 92.1% was the eighth best among the 106 women that competed.

In the women's 75-79 division Cheryl Kohut, 78, of Cold Spring, NY returned as the defending national champion. At last year's championships she won the division in a time of 1:07:33. This year she finished just off the podium in fourth place running 1:22:48 (72.1%). The division was won by Jeannie Rice of Ohio in a new world and American record time of 54:53.

In the men's 60-64 division, Philip Cawkwell, 63, of Bedford finished 16th in a time of 52:56 (76.7%).

* Each athlete's time is converted to an age-grading percentage score which compares their time to the best-possible performance (100%) for a runner their age. Age-graded scores allow comparision of performances across all ages.

Performances over 90% are classified as world-class and performances between 80 and 90% are classified as national-class performances.
