(26-Jan) Running against a field of professional athletes for the first time in her career
Katelyn Tuohy
, 16, of Stony Point set a new national high school record in the 3000m today at the 2nd annual Dr. Sander Invitational Columbia Challenge held at the The Armory’s New Balance Track & Field Center in New York City.
Tuohy, who led the field at 2000m in 5:58.70, finished third stopping the clock at 9:01.81. Amanda Eccleston (Brooks) won the race in 8:56.68 with Heather Kampf (Asics) a close second in 8:56.87. Hoka NJNY TC teammates
Rolanda Bell
and
Katy Kunc
finished sixth and eighth, respectively running 9:16.46 and 9:21.03. The previous mark of 9:04.51 was set in 2013 by Mary Cain of Bronxville, NY.
“I was having a great time out there,” Tuohy offered to armorytrack.com. “I was so close to breaking 9 minutes, but that will give me motivation for the future.
“My goal was to see what it was like to race against professionals, but I had a time goal for a sub-9. It was a little intimidating, but I had a lot of fun. It was so much easier racing with girls who are better than me and I just worked off them.”
The national record was her third indoor high school record. Last year she set the 2000m record running 5:57.56 and the 5,000m record of 15:37.12.
