Gavenas, Kirkpatrick, Prospect Park, and NovaStarz Win Titles at Region 1 Championships in Maine


Two Hundred and Twenty Seve (227) athletes from Indiana competed in the 2014 USATF Region 1 Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships on November 23.  
Individuals finishing in the top thirty (30) and the top five (5) teams in each division qualified for the national championships which will be held on December 13 in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. A total of 61 athletes and 7 teams from New York qualified for the national championships.
Winning individual titles from New York were Tamrat Gavenas and Shaniqua Kirkpatrick.  Gavens (New York / Prospect Park Youth Running Club) easily won the boys 8 & under division outrunning the closest competitor by 21 seconds over the 2 km course.  His time was 8:03.
Kirkpatrick (Queens/ Ruff Kutz) won the 17-18 girls race in equally dominating fashion running a time of 20:36 to finish 25 seconds ahead of Shannen Arseneault from New Hampshire.
