Wilson & Williams Win in Greensboro

GREENSBORO, N.C. - W was the letter of the day as Elijuhuan Wilson(Brooklyn) and My'khiyah Williams(Brooklyn) both won national Junior Olympic titles on the last day of competition at the USATF National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships on the campus of North Carolina A&T University. The final day of the seven day competition was filled with action on the track and in the field and Indiana athletes were in the mix in many of the events visiting the All-American awards podium on twelve different occasions. 

Wilson won the first title for New York during the championships as he captured the boys 11-12 1500m in a time of 4:42.90 during the morning session. He was in a pack of 4 with 250m to go and then used a strong kick over the last 90 meters to reach the line first.  Video

In the afternoon session Williams won the girls 11-12 high jump with a leap of 1.55m (5-01). Despite coming into the competition as the #2 seed Williams was 2 inches higher than second place today. Williams will be a seventh grader in the fall at Oceanhill Collegiate Charter School in Brooklyn. She started high jumping as a 1st grader.

Nearly joining Wilson and Williams on the top level of the podium was Sarah Flynn (New Rochelle) who finished just two one-hundredths of a second out of first place in the girls 11-12 1500m. Flynn who ran 4:48.60 held the lead until the last 20m when Athing MU of New Jersey just got by her. Flynn also finished 2nd in the 3000m earlier in the week.  Video

Four other 1500m runners earned All-American status on Sunday as they finished amongst the top eight in their divisions. Chelsie Ogindo (Westchester Striders TFC) finished 3rd in the girls 15-16 with a time of 4:45.70 - Video.  Aaron Brown (Metro Eagles TC), Julia Plawiak (Notre Dame TC), and Elizabeth Perez (Awesome Power TC) each finished 6th in their divisions. Brown ran 5:36.84 in the boys 7-8 division. Plawiak ran 5:51.89 in the girls 7-8 division. Perez stopped the clock at 4:50.32 in the girls 15-16 division.

The girls 13-14 400m finals featured three athletes from New York. Finishing 3rd wasJasmine Douglas Grant (unattached) in 56.89. Not far behind Douglas Grant wereParis Peoples (Halls Express II) in 6th place and Daniella Griffith (Medgar Evers Cougars TC) in 7th. Their times were 57.54 and 57.70.  Video

The last two New Yorkers to earn a spot on the All-American podium were 100m runners Adaria Reaves (ZODIACS Track) and Michel Parker (Harlem Children's TC). Both finished 7th in their races. Reaves ran 14.97 in the girls 7-8 and Parker ran 13.14 in the 11-12 division.  Video (Parker)
