For the second year in a row, New York hosted the USATF Hershey Youth Indoor Championships.  The event was held March 10-12 at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex on Staten Island. A total of 2,701 athletes from across the country competed in 4,900 events. Seven hundred seventy three (773) athletes from the New York association competed in a total of 1100 events, including 125 relay teams. It was the largest turnout in the meet’s seven year history.

In all, 70 new national meet records were set during the three-day competition; 11 by New York athletes.

New York athletes won 22 events and 13 relays and visited the awards podium a total of 257 times for top six finishes in individual and relay events.

While there were a mondo of outstanding performances by New Yorkers the headliners when the dust had settled were Christian Walker (Metro Eagles) and Tamrat Gavenas (Prospect Park Youth Running) both competing in the boys 9-10 division.  Walker won three events on Sunday in the span of just 5 hours and Gavenas won two events; setting meet records in both.  Walker started Sunday morning off by winning the 55m in 7.70 and then just 45 minutes later came back and won a thrilling 400m in 1:02.64 to edge Avery Atexide of New Jersey by less than .50 seconds.  His time was just .40 seconds off the meet record.  Three hours later he was back on the track winning the 200m in dominating fashion; again over Atexide.  His time of 27.15 put him over a second clear of Atexide and just missed the meet record by .08 seconds.

On Saturday, Gavenas ran to victory in a thrilling 800m race that saw him and Ethan Long of Maryland battle all the way to the line as both were well under the previous record of 2:32.12.  Gavenas won running 2:27.01 with Long just .28 seconds back.   In the 1500m on Sunday Gavenas ran unchallenged, winning by over 15 seconds, as he set his second meet record in two days.  His time of 4:56.90 broke the previous record of 5:04.54 set in 2014 by Aaron Drumwright.

Joining Walker and Gavenas as multiple gold medalists was Wilem Wikstrom who won the boys 8 & under 800m and 1500m; setting big personal bests in each event by large margins.  On Saturday he ran to victory in the 800m running 2:45.81 to break his previous personal best by over 16 seconds.   Then on Sunday he ran 5:32.40 to win the 1500m by over 21 seconds.  The time was 26 seconds better than his pervious best time. He also finished third in the 400m running 1:15.48.
