The USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships for open (elite) and junior (ages 20 & under) athletes begin today on the campus of the University of Oregon in Eugene, Oregon and will run through Sunday.  Forty (40) open athletes and twelve (12) junior athletes from the New York association are entered in the championships.

Athletes competing in the open championships are vying for spots on Team USA for the IAAF World Championships to be held in late August in Beijing. Athletes in the junior championships are contending for Team USA selection for the  Pan American Junior Athletics Championships July 31-August 2 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

A trio of  women throwers and New York AC teammates - Amanda Bingson, Gia Lewis-Smallwood, and Michelle Carter -  enter the championships as defending champions, current American record holders, and favorites to secure spots on Team USA for the world championships later this summer.  Bingson (Hammer Throw), Lewis-Smallwood (Discus), and Carter (Shot Put) all won last year in Sacramento and also enter this year year’s competition with the #1 marks in their events.  Although not a #1 seed, American record holder, nor defending champion, Brittany Borman (NYAC) is the #2 seed in the Javelin throw and looks to secure her spot for Beijing.  Last year Borman finished second in the Javelin.  Joining Borman as a #2 seed is Miranda Melville (Rush, N.Y. / NYAC) who will content for the 20,000m Race Walk title on Sunday morning.

A quartet of NYAC teammates - Amanda Smock (Triple Jump), Geneva Stevens (Hammer Throw), Nicole Tully (5000m), and Kibwe Johnson (Hammer Throw) - come into the championships with #3 seeds in their events.

Another quartet of athletes are entered as #4 seeds in their respective events.  They are Gwendolyn Berry (Hammer Throw), Heather Miller-Koch (Heptathlon), Natasha Hastings(400m), and Kyle Merber (1500m).
