Simmons, Keflezighi, Brown, Grey Named February Athletes of the Month

OPEN
Jasmine Simmons, 27, of Elmsford, N.Y. has been selected as the USATF New York Open Athlete of the Month for February 2016. Simmons, who competes for Central Park Track Club New Balance, started the month off by winning the long jump at the Armory Invitationals on February 5.  She jumped a lifetime best of 6.48m (21-3.25) which makes her the #10 U.S. performer in 2016 leading into the USATF Championships in Portland next week.  On February 14 she finished a strong second at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix meet in Boston, leaping 6.34m (20-9.75).  On February 27 at the Fast Track Invitational in New York she won the long jump (6.19m) and finished fifth in the 60m hurdles (7.66).  In the qualifying heats she ran 7.64.  Simmons is entered and expected to compete at this weekend’s USATF Indoor Track & Field Championships in Portland.



MASTERS
Meb Keblezighi, 40, of San Diego, Calf. has been selected as the USATF New York Masters Athlete of the Month for February 2016. On February 13 at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Marathon Keblezighi finished second to make his fourth Olympic team.  The 2004 Olympic silver medalist ran 2:12:20 breaking the the U.S. masters marathon record of 2:13:32 he set at the 2015 TCS New York Marathon.  
 






YOUTH
Brianna Brown, 13, of Bronx, N.Y. has been selected as the USATF New York Youth Athlete of the Month for February 2016. Brown (Team Dynasty) won the 55m, 200m, and 400m at both the Northeast Zone Championships (February 21) and New York Association Championships (February 28).  She ended the month holding the association records in all three events.  At the Northwest Zone championships she ran 25.54 in the 200m and 56.91 in the 400m to establish new association records and then the following week at the New York championships ran 7.39 in the 55m to add her name to the record book for the third time.




HIGH SCHOOL
Rayvon Grey, 18, of Beacon, N.Y. has been selected as the USATF New York High School Athlete of the Month for February 2016.   Grey, a senior at Beacon High School who has signed a letter of intent to enroll at LSU, had an amazing triple on February 10 at the NYSPHSAA Section 1 Class B, C Championships.  He won the 55m, long jump, and triple jump.  In the 55m he ran 6.55; just off his lifetime best of 6.44 run earlier in the year.  In the long jump he leaped 24-11.50 to set a lifetime best by 3 inches and then finished the day off with a 48-3 in the triple jump.  The long jump is currently #2 U.S. for high school athletes and established a new USATF New York 17-18 division record.  On February 21 he won the long jump (23-8.75) and triple jump (48-1) at the NYSPHSAA Section 1 State Qualifier.  On February 26 at the Dream Big Pentathlon Invitational he won the long jump (23-7.50) and finished second in the 300m running 35.33.  

(note: on March 5 Grey won the triple jump at the NYSPHSAA Indoor State Championships with a leap of 49-6.50 which is U.S. #2 in 2016).
