Alexander, Kimche, Wikstrom, Timm selected as September Athletes of the Month

OPEN - Colby Alexander
Colby Alexander, 26, of Tarrytown, NY has been selected as the USATF New York Open Athlete of the Month for September 2017.   He competes for the Hoka New Jersey New York TC.

In the span of 10 days Alexander competed in four races - all at the 1 mile distance; two in in New York and two, 4,800 miles away, in Alaska.
 
On September 6 he finished sixth in the Hoka Long Island 1 Mile running 3:59.23.  Four days later he took to the roads at the New Balance 5th Avenue Mile where he finished fifth running 3:53. 
 
Just three days later and nearly 5,000 miles away he finished third at the Great Alaska Mile Series meet in Anchorage running 4:00.01.  His Hoka NJNYTC teammate Kyle Merber won the race in 3:59.36 with Ben Blankenship second in 3:59.67. Merber, the meet director for the Hoka Long Island Mile, joined Alexander in the same cross-continental journey as he and Alexandra went 2-2 against each other.
 
On September 16, Alexander finished second at the Great Alaska Mile Series meet in Kodiak, running 4:00.46.  The race was won Blankenship in 3:57.85 which is the fastest time ever recorded in Alaska. Merber was fourth in 4:03.18.
 
Alexander finished second overall in the 2-meet series with a combined time of 8:00.47. Blankenship won with a combined time of 7:57.52.

MASTERS - Sylvie Kimche 
Sylvie Kimche, 70, of New York, N.Y. has been selected as the USATF New York Masters Athlete of the Month for September 2017.  Kimche competes for the Central Park TC New Balance. 

On September 10 she won the 70-74 division at the New Balance 5th Avenue Mile running 6:53. She was 1:21 ahead of the second place finisher.  For perspective the American record on the track in the 70-74 divines is 6:45.80. The time scored 97.29% on the age grading performance tables*. 
 
At the New Balance Bronx 10 Mile on September 24 Kimche ran 1:24:48 to again win the 70-74 division; this time by over 16 minutes.  The time was worth 86.96% on the age graded performance tables.
 
In the week between the two road races she competed in the NYRR Kurt Steiner Cross Country 5K at Van Cortlandt Park where she ran 27:20 to win her division again.  (note: On October 1 she ran 26:38 at Van Cortlandt Park in the NYRR Harry Murphy 5K).
 
* The age grading scoring tables provide a means to converted each athlete’s performance in a manner to allow for comparing performances regardless of the age or gender of the athlete. Scores of 80%-89% are considered to be national class while scores above 90% are classified as world class performances.)

YOUTH - Wilem Wikstrom
Wilem Wikstrom, 8, of New York has been selected as the USATF New York Youth Athlete of the Month for September 2017. 

Wikstrom competed in both of the USATF New York Cross Country series meets held at Van Cortlandt Park in September.  In both races he ran times fast enough to rank in the top five all-time over the 2 km course.
 
On September 24 he won the boys 8 & under race by 18 seconds, running 7:58.  The time makes him the third fastest performer on the all-time list.  The top two are Tamrat Gavenas (7:36) and Amos Pres (7:53).  
 
The following week he won by 36 seconds in 8:05, which if he had not run faster the week before would be #4 on the list (note: only the athlete’s fastest time is included on the all-time lists).

High School - Caroline Timm
Caroline Timm, 17, of Poughkeepsie, N.Y. has been selected as the USATF New York High School Athlete of the Month for September 2017.

Timm, 17, a senior at Our Lady of Lourdes, won the Suffern Invitational on September 16 running 18:34 for 3 miles.  In that race she defeated fellow up-stater Alexandra Thomas of Tappan Zee High School by 9 seconds.
 
The next week she traveled north to compete in the Ocean State XC Invitational in East Greenwich, Rhode Island.  In Rhode Island she finished fifth in the championship race running 18:47.  The race was won by Kelsey Chmiel (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) who is currently ranked #6 in the US by Milesplit.
