Melville, Kline, Graham, Newland selected as December Athletes of the Month

OPEN - Miranda Melville
Miranda Melville, 27, of San Diego, Calf. has been selected as the USATF New York Open Athlete of the Month for November 2016. Lundy, who competes for the New York Athletic Club and Skechers Performance, won the USATF 5000m Race Walk title on December 31 in Rochester, N.Y.  Her time of 22:35.56 broke the U.S. record she had set at the same meet last year by 4.15 seconds.  The event was setup to let competitors to complete 10,000m and Melville used the opportunity to double the distance and double the records on the day, as she added the U.S. record for 10,000m. Her time 45:29.28 (previous record was 50:14.35 by Erin Taylor-Talcott in 2015).  Following the record setting day, Melville was selected as the USATF Athlete of the Week.  This is the second USATF New York Athlete of the Month honor for Melville in 2016 (she also earned it in April).
 
 
MASTERS - Jonathan Kline
Jonathan Kline, 56, of New York, has been selected as the USATF New York Masters Athlete of the Month for December 2016. Kline, who competes for the Dashing Whippets Running Team, place 11th in the 55-59 division at the USATF National Club Cross Country Championships in Tallahassee, Florida.  His time of 37:53 over the 10 km course was the fastest performance turned in by a New York athlete in the men’s masters race.
 
 


 
YOUTH - Alissa Graham
Alissa Graham, 10, of Brooklyn, N.Y., has been selected as the USATF New York Youth Athlete of the Month for December 2016. On December 10, Graham (Club44) finished second in the 9-10 girls race at the USATF National Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships in Hoover, Alabama.  She covered the 3 km course in 11:57 to finish just three seconds behind winner Bethany Michalak of Colorado.   Graham ended the year with three Junior Olympic all-American honors as she had finished second in the 800m and 1500m at the track & field championships in July in California.  She also won 800m and 1500m titles at both the indoor and outdoor Hershey nationals earlier in the year.
 
 

HIGH SCHOOL - Ramone Newland
Ramone Newland , 19, of Brooklyn, N.Y. has been selected as the USATF New York High School Athlete of the Month for December 2016.   Newland, a senior at South Shore High School, started the month off winning the 600m at the PSAL Jim McKay Memorial Invitational running 1:25.23.  On December 17 he won the 55m at the AT&T Coaches Hall of Fame Invitational in 6.39 (2016 NY #1, US #5).  Ten days later he ran to victory in 300m at the PSAL Holiday Classic stopping the clock at 34.24 (2016 NY #1, US#2).  And then on December 30 he closed out the month winning the 55m in 6.44 at the Ocean Breeze Holiday Festival.
