McCarthy, St. Jean, de Freitas, Flynn Selected as September Athletes of the Month

Philip McCarthy, 47, of New York has been selected as the USATF New York Open Athlete of the Month for September 2015.  McCarthy finished sixth overall in the USATF 24 Hour Championships September 19-20 in Cleveland, Ohio.  Over the 24 hours he ran a total of 124.5804 miles.  In the masters 45-49 division he placed second just 1.5 miles behind Eric Hunker of Ohio. MASTERS
Jennifer St. Jean, 41, of Darien, Conn. has been selected as the USATF New York Masters Athlete of the Month for September 2015.  At the NYRR 5th Avenue Mile on September 13 St. Jean, who runs for the Westerchester Track Club, ran 5:06 to win the women’s 40-44 division by 12 seconds.  Two weeks later she finished first in the Open and Women’s 40-44 division at the USATF New York Cross Country Series Meet #1 at Van Cortlandt Park.  Her time was 19:24.
 


Youth
Noland de Freitas, 14, of Cornwall, N.Y. has been selected as the USATF New York Youth Athlete of the Month for September 2015.  On September 20, de Freitas (New York Starz Track Club) won the 13-14 division at the New Jersey Striders XC Series #1 in Mahwah, NJ.  His time was 15:22.  The following week, at the USATF New York Cross Country Series Meet #1 at Van Cortlandt Park, he set the New York Association 13-14 4 km record running 14:23.05.
 
 

High School
Sarah Flynn, 14, of New Rochelle, N.Y. has been selected as the USATF New York High School Athlete of the Month for September 2015. Flynn, a freshman at Ursuline High School , won the Varsity B race at the Wild Safari Cross Country Invitational in Jackson, NJ on September 27.  Her time of 18:27 was the fastest time of the day.  Two weeks earlier she ran 15:22 at the CHSAA Practice meet at Van Cortlandt Park.
