Getting To Know........Leilani Gibson

In December, Leilani Gibson, a 3rd grader from Brooklyn, NY finished 9th at the USATF National Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships in South Carolina.  Leilah was kind enough to answer a series of questions so we could get to know her a bit better.

Gibson_Leilani.jpgTell us about your experience running at the national championships in South Carolina.
I was soo excited to run at the national championships because I worked very hard in the regionals, boy did I have a great time it was soo many girls all running together and I wanted to get out fast. I made it to the top ten out of over 200 girls and I was soo proud. A lot of the girls were very nice to me and people I didn't know were cheering for me. I didn't know some of the people who knew my name and I was proud. I loved it.
 
Tell us about how you starting running?
I started running with my family at McCarren Park in Williamsburg, Brooklyn NY at the age of 3 years old. I was chasing my older brother and I kept running and running.  My very first competition was in the winter of 2010 at the Colgate Women's Games at the age of 4 years old, I was only old enough to run as a baby runner. I was very fast.

What is your favorite color?
Sky Blue And Purple.
 
How often do you run?
I practice 4 - 5 days a week.
 
Do you have a coach?
Yes.  My mother and father coach me. They keep it really fun.  We run the obstacle courses that they sets up as part of my training.
 
What do you enjoy about running?
I enjoy the excitement of running it makes me happy to challenge myself to run faster. I love to move up while racing the other girls and also to run with other people that I have raced against for a long time. It is fun to me to run long distances. The crowd cheering makes me excited also.
 
Who is your favorite athlete?
I have two favorite athletes. Allyson Felix and Alysia Montano
 
Who are your role models?
Sandra Richards Ross is one of my role models because she inspires me to be successful in my races she is an Olympian with a style of her own and I really like her personality.
 
What is your favorite food?
All Seafood but mostly crabs.
 
What are your goals for the track season?
My goals are always to pr and run faster. I want to go to nationals every time that I can.
 
What are your favorite running shoes?
My favorite running shoes are my Nike Zoom Rival

Tell Us A Bit About School - What are your favorite subjects?
I enjoy reading and writing stories. Math is my favorite subject.
