Garn, Troshkin, Gavenas, Griffiths selected as April Athletes of the Month

OPEN - Jesse Garn
Jesse Garn, 23, of White Plains, NY has been selected as the USATF New York Open Athlete of the Month for April 2017. 
 
Garn, a 2016 grad of Binghamton University, who now competes for the Hoka NJNY Track Club, started the month off winning the 1500m at the Sam Howell Invitational in Princeton on April 7.  His time was 3:47.25.

Two weeks later he was back in Princeton as he finished second in the 800m at the Larry Ellis Invitational running 1:45.96. The time was a career best by 1.02 seconds and is currently U.S. #6 in 2017.

On April 30 he closed the month winning the Penn Relays Olympic Development 1 mile; stopping the clock at 4:00.83.
 
 
MASTERS - Vyacheslav Troshkin
Vyacheslav Troshkin, 68, of Brooklyn has been selected as the USATF New York Masters Athlete of the Month for April 2017.  Troshkin competes for the Park Racewalkers. 

On April 22 Troshkin won the masters 65-69 national title at the USATF Masters 20 km Race Walking Championships held in Whiting, N.J.  Troshkin completed the 12.4 mile course in 2:04:51. He was 13 minutes ahead of Andrew Smith of Michigan who was the second place finisher in the division. He was the fourth male finisher overall; finishing behind three athletes in their 50s.  race results


YOUTH - Tamrat Gavenas
Tamrat Gavenas, 9, of New York has been selected as the USATF New York Youth Athlete of the Month for April 2017.  Gavenas is a member of the Prospect Park Youth Running Club.

During the month of April Gavenas raced twice;  setting new association records both times.  At the Youth Challenge - Season Opener on April 9 he won the 1 mile in 5:32.22.  The time broke the previous association record of 5:33.08 set in 2014 by Michael Rodriguez King.
 
Two weeks later, at the Youth Challenge - NY Relays, Gavenas smashed his own 3000m association record by over 32 seconds with a time of 10:12.92.
 

HIGH SCHOOL - Ronaldo Griffiths 
Ronaldo Griffiths, 18, of Brooklyn, NY has been selected as the USATF New York High School Athlete of the Month for April 2017.

Griffiths, a senior at Clara Barton High School, started the month off competing at two different meets over the April 7-8 weekend.  On April 7 he won the 400m hurdles at the NYC Mayor’s Cup at Icahn Stadium running 55.78. The following day at the Knight Time Invitational in Uniondale he won the 400m and finished second in the 200m.  His times were 50.17 in the 400m and 22.46 in the 200m.  The 200m time is currently the #5 scholastic time in New York this year.

The next week he traveled to the Carifta Games in CuraƧao where he won the 400m hurdles running 52.01.  The time was just .09 seconds off his career best of 51.92 run at the Carifta Trails in March.  The 51.92 currently is the #1 performance in the U.S. for 2017.

On April 21 he won the 110m hurdles at the New York Relays running 14.78 into a 2.1 head wind.  He also ran 49.81 in the 400m to finish tenth.

He closed the month out with a third place finish in the 400m hurdles at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia; running 52.77.
