Edwards & Lindner Win Multiple Masters Titles in Florida

7/27/2015

Over the weekend eleven (11) New York members competed in the USA Masters Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Jacksonville, Florida.  The athletes competed in a total of thirty (30) events during the four-day meet held at the on the campus of University of North Florida.  Five (5) athletes brought national titles back to New York with them.  In total, New York athletes visited the awards podium, for finishing in the top three in their event, a total of fifteen (15) times.

Leading the New York medal haul were Lisa Edwards (Bronx, N.Y. / Central Park TC-New Balance) who won four titles and Kimberly Lindner(Chappaqua, N.Y.) with two titles.  Peter Brady(Jersey City, N.J. / Central Park TC-New Balance), Michael Brown (St. Albans, N.Y.) and Judy Stobbe (New York / Central Park TC-New Balance) also won national titles.

Four wins for Edwards
Lisa Edwards had a busy weekend, competing in the women 35-39 division, as she won the 200m, 800m, 100m hurdles, and 400m hurdles.  She also finished fifth in the 400m.  Her winning times were 26.20 (200m), 2:40.56 (800m), 17.56 (100m hurdles), and 1:11.19 (400m hurdles).  On a special note, Edwards had the opportunity to compete alongside her mother Sandra Edwards who finished fourth in the Shot Put and fifth in the discus throw in the M65 division.

Lindner won titles in the W40 shot put and discus.  Her winning marks were 10.74m (35-3) in the shot put and 35.43m (116-3) in the discus.  Lindner was the 1989 Pennsylvania state high school discus throw champion and went on to compete at the University of Pennsylvania.  “Two years ago I got back into throwing after a 20 year hiatus  when my daughter expressed interest and I took her to a meet,” offered Lindner on her start to masters competition. “ We threw together at that meet and she was instantly hooked. Now I'm practicing and training regularly with her.”   Lindner’s daughter, Kira, will be competing in the USATF National Junior Olympic Championships this week; also being held in Jacksonville.

800m madness
In addition to the 800m title by Edwards, New York claimed three more titles in the 2-lap event.

Peter Brady won his third straight title in the M40 800m running 1:59.15 to outlast Mark Williams of New Jersey by .48 seconds.  Last year Brady also narrowly defeated Williams when just .23 seconds separated the two.  “I was very happy to win again this year,” offered Brady via email. “Mark is a great competitor so I knew it would be a battle all the way to the finish just like last year.”

Also winning an 800m title was Judy Stobbe as she captured the W50 title in convincing fashion; running a lifetime best 2:27.51 to win by nearly 10 seconds. It was her first national masters title and surpassed her high school best of 2:29 from 1982. Stobbe also picked up a silver medal as she finished second in the 1500m in a time of 5:06.90.

Winning a fourth 800m title for New York was Michael Brown as he captured the M30 division running 2:01.24.  “It is a joy to say that I have 4 national titles under my belt and to represent USATF New York,” stated Brown following his victory. Brown did not stop there as he competed in four additional events. He finished second in the 400m (51.04), fourth in the 1500m (4:47.33), fifth in the 400m hurdles (1:02.72), and eighth in the 200m (23.69).

…and more medals
Kenrick Smith (Brooklyn, N.Y.) won a silver and bronze medal while Ivan Black(New York), and Ian Colley (Tarrytown, N.Y.) each earned bronze medals during the competition.

Smith finished second in the M65 100m and third in the 200m running 12.99 and  27.63.  Colley was third in the M45 3000m steeplechase running 15:22.93 and Black was third in the M65 100m hurdles running 20.88.  Colley also finished fourth in the triple jump and javelin and Black picked up four fifth place finishes in the 300m hurdles, high jump, long jump, and triple jump.
