Black, Edwards, Brown Win Titles At Masters Championships in North Carolina

3/26/2015

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C -  Over the weekend twelve (12) athletes from the New York Association participated in the USA Masters Indoor Track & Field Championships in Winston-Salem, NC.  The athletes competed in a total of twenty-nine (29) events during the three day meet held at the JPL Fast Track complex.  Three athletes brought national titles back to New York with them and each added additional medals for finishing in the top three in other events.  New York athletes reached the awards podium a total of sixteen (16) times over the course of the meet.

Leading the New York efforts were  Ivan Black (New York), Lisa Edwards (Bronx, NY / Central Park Track Club New Balance), and Michael Brown (Saint. Albans, NY) who each won a national title.  Black also won two silver medals and a bronze medal while Brown and Edwards each earned a silver medal.

Ivan Black, 66, was granted the pleasure of climbing to the top of the awards podium for winning the M65 Triple Jump with a mark of 9.00m/29'6½”.  He picked up his silver medals for second place finishes in the 60m Hurdles running 11.88 and the Pentathlon with a score of 2885 points.  In the Pentathlon he came up just 3 points shy of winning the competition.  Black won his bronze medal in the Long Jump with a leap of 4.02m/13'2¼”.  Black completed his busy weekend with a fourth place finish in the High Jump and running legs on non-club 4x200m, 4x400m, and 4x800m relay teams.

Lisa Edwards, 36, claimed her fifth career masters individual national title as she won the W35 400m (video).  Her time of 1:03.00 edged Danelle Readinger of Indiana by .37 seconds.  Edwards also placed second in the 200m running 27.40. “I enjoyed my time in North Carolina and was able to see family who live in the area,” offered Edwards. “Watching the all the athletes compete, especially those in their 80s and 90s, was inspiring.”  Also inspiring Edwards was her mother’s (Sandra Edwards) 4th place finish in the W65 Shot Put.

At last year’s Indoor Championships in Boston, Michael Brown, 31, finished second in the M30 800m and won the 400m.  This year he reversed those finishes as he won the 800m and was the runner-up in the 400m.  In the 800m he ran 2:04.90 to outrun Justin Bishop of South Carolina by just under two seconds.  In the 400m, Brown ran 52.03 to nearly follow the 51.73 by Jamar Glenn of Georgia.  “I respect all the older people that are still running,” stated Brown. “It gives a young man such as myself more push to keep on running and competing.” The win in the 800m was Brown’s third career title in masters competition.

Picking up a pair of silver medals was Jennifer St Jean (Darien, Conn. / Westchester Track Club).  St Jean, 40, was second in the both the W40 800m and 1 mile running times of 2:26.24 and 5:14.72.

Also earning silver medals were fellow Brooklynites Olive Smart and Kenrick Smith.  Smart, 41, was second in the W40 400m running 1:04.96 and Smith, 65, picked up his second place in the M65 200m with a time of 28.64.  Smith also was third in the 60m (8.47) while Smart finished fifth in the 800m (2:34.59).

Judy Stobbe (New York / Central Park Track Club New Balance) and Tibita Kaneene (New York) rounded-out the awards podium visits by the New York contingent.  Competing in the M45 division Stobbe, 49, finished third in both the 800m (2:32.72) and 1 mile (5:38.98).  Kaneene, 34, earned his bronze medal in the M30 400m running 56.85.

Fourth place finishes were: Black (M65 High Jump), Sandra Edwards (W65 Shot Put), Richard Jones (M70 400m), and Conor O’Driscoll (M50 1 mile).
