Berry, Brady, Walker, Ryan selected as March Athletes of the Month

OPEN - Gwen Berry
Gwen Berry, 27, of Oxford, Miss. and a member of the New York Athletic Club has been selected as the USATF New York Open Athlete of the Month for March 2017.  At the USATF Indoor Championships, held March 3-5 in Albuquerque, N.M., Berry won the weight throw establishing a new world best mark of 25.60 (84-0).  The record setting performance came on her sixth and final throw of the competition and broke the 10 year old record set by Brittany Riley by over a foot.  Berry also threw 25.22m (82-9) and 25.21m (82-8½) during the competition; the #4 and #5 throws ever in the event.  On March 26, Berry opened up her outdoor season winning the hammer throw at the Joe Walker Invitational in Oxford, Miss. Her winning mark was 71.94m (236-0); currently the #5 mark in the world.
 
 
MASTERS - Peter Brady
Peter Brady, 45, of Jersey City, N.J. has been selected as the USATF New York Masters Athlete of the Month for March 2017.  Brady competes for the Central Park Track Club.  Brady traveled all the way to South Korea to compete against the best masters athletes in the world at the 2017 World Masters Indoor Championships and returned with two medals.  The championships were took place March 19-25 in Daegu.  Brady won a silver and bronze medal in his first world championships.   In the 800m he finished second to Mark 0’Shea of Ireland in a tactical race that saw the entire pack come through the 400m at 1:07. Brady took the lead briefly with 100m to go but could not hold off the hard charging O’Shea.  Brady ran 2:07.72 to finish just .58 seconds behind O’Shea.  In the 1500m the pace was more honest as Brady took the lead early and the pack came through 400m in 1:05, 800m in 2:12, and 1200m in 3:21.  At the bell he was in second just behind Frédéric Gilbert of France.  O’Shea was in fourth about 10m behind Brady.  Brady attempted unsuccessfully to get by Gilbert coming of the last turn while O’Shea kicked by both Brady and then Gilbert to take the win.  The three were repeated by just .36 seconds with Brady running 4:07.80 for the bronze.   Race Videos  800m   1500m

YOUTH - Christian Walker
Christian Walker, 10, of Springfield Gardens, N.Y. has been selected as the USATF New York Youth Athlete of the Month for March 2017.  Walker is a member of the Metro Eagles Track & Field Club.
 
In the span of just five hours, Walker won three events on the final day of the Hershey USATF Youth Indoor Championships held March 10-12 at Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in New York.  Walker started Sunday morning off by winning the 55m in 7.70 and then just 45 minutes later came back and won a thrilling 400m in 1:02.64 to edge Avery Atexide of New Jersey by less than .50 seconds.  His time was just .40 seconds off the meet record.  Three hours later he was back on the track winning the 200m in dominating fashion; again over Atexide.  His time of 27.15 put him over a second clear of Atexide and just missed the meet record by .08 seconds.  His performances were recognized by USATF as he was named the Athlete of the Week.
 

 
HIGH SCHOOL - Kaitlin Ryan 
Kaitlin Ryan, 17 of Tuckahoe, NY has been selected as the USATF New York High School Athlete of the Month for March 2017.  
 
On March 4, Ryan, a senior at Bronxville High School, won the 1000m at the New York State Indoor Championships.  Her time was 2:50.15.  In February she ran 2:48.15 at the Section 1 Class C Champs which was the #5 U.S. high school time in 2017.  A week later at the New Balance Indoor Nationals she ran 2:08.63 to finish second in the 800m and then rallied her team to a third place finish in the Spring Medley Relay running 2:08.04 for her 800m anchor split.
