Alexander, Schiffman, Sheppard, Gallagher Named September Athletes of the Month

OPEN - Colby Alexander

Colby Alexander
, 25, of Lebanon, N.J. has been selected as the USATF New York Open Athlete of the Month for August 2016. Alexander who competes for Hoka One One and the New Jersey New York Track club only competed in one race in September but it was an impressive one.
 
On September 3 at the New Balance 5th Avenue Mile, competing against a world class field, he finished third running 3:51 (3:50.3).  His time is the 12th fastest time run in the 36 editions of the race.
 
Just a day before the calendar turned from August to September Alexander finished fourth at the Hoka One One Long Island Mile running 3:56.11.

Alexander, a 2015 graduate of the University of Oregon, finished seventh in the 1500m at the 2016 Olympic Trials this summer.
 

MASTERS - Hank Schiffman

Hank Schiffman
, 67, of New York has been selected as the USATF New York Masters Athlete of the Month for September 2016.  Schiffman competes for the Central Park TC - New Balance.
 
Schiffman started the month off by finished third in the men’s 65-69 division at the New Balance 5th Avenue Mile on September 3.  His time was 5:56.  Two weeks later at the Kurt Steiner Cross Country race in the Bronx he covered the 5 km course in 22:23 to win his division.  The following week, on September 25 he ran 1:12:12 at the New Balance Bronx 10-Mile to once again winning his age division.
 
 
 
YOUTH - Rainn Sheppard

Rainn Sheppard
, 10, of Brooklyn, N.Y. has been selected as the USATF New York Youth Athlete of the Month for September 2016.  She competes for Jeuness TC in the girls 11-12 division
 
On September 3, Sheppard won the girls 14 & under division at the New Balance 5th Avenue Mile. He winning time of 5:28 was 14 seconds clear of runner up Leilani Gibson of Connecticut.  On September 25 she won the 11-12 girls division at the USATF New York Cross Country Series meet at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx.  Her time of 12:02 is the fourth fastest time for the girls 11-12 division.
 
 

HIGH SCHOOL - Ryan Gallagher

Ryan Gallagher
, 17, of Briarcliff Manor, N.Y. has been selected as the USATF New York High School Athlete of the Month for September 2016.   Gallagher is a senior at Briarcliff High School.

On September 17, Gallagher won the Queensbury Invitational running 16:06 over the 5 km course.  A week later he traveled to New Jersey and won the Varsity D race at the Six Flags Wild Safari Invitational in Jackson, N.J. His time of 15:47 was the fastest time produced out of the five varsity races.
